Did you know that until the 1900s, rich women were expected to learn at least one instrument, read music, perform and even compose? But they weren’t allowed to perform in public because society thought it was immoral. Some female composers released their music under false male names, and have since been long forgotten. Nan Mozart is one of them, Mozart’s incredibly talented big sister, and this is her story. Maria Anna Mozart’s existence is never mentioned in history books or the movies. She may as well have never existed, but this brand new musical finally celebrates her.
The production is directed by Stephanie Klemons. And there’s an all-star West End and Broadway cast on the job, including Gabrielle Brooks (Get Up! Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical, Once on this Island) as Nan Mozart herself, Tyrone Huntley (Hello, Dolly!, Jesus Christ Superstar) as her brother the composer, with Anthony Rapp (Rent, If/Then, Star Trek: Discovery) as Count Franz von Walsegg, and Laura Pitt-Pulford (Standing at the Sky’s Edge) as Anna Maria Mozart. They’re joined by Vinny Coyle as Johann Baptist zu Sonnenburg, Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer as Constanze Weber, and Emily Squibb as Karoline von Walsegg / Cover Nan, Emily Panes, Elisabeth Snegir, Daisie Mariella, Jordan Fox, Harry Chandler, Bethaney Wellings-Davies, Evie-Leigh Savage, Jacob Wye, Larissa Gerske, Maxfield Haynes, Addison Ector and Charlotte Edmonds.
